I believe it’s more likely that XBOX running Steam and PS games was the bigger reason. PC players are not a direct competitor for couch gamers. Different breeds entirely. People who.game on PC does so either because their genra is underrepresented on consoles or purely because they prefer keyboard+mouse (or because they loaded and want to play 4K@240fps). In any other scenarios the PS is the superior choice.

Putting the blame on the Steam Machine isn’t the reasoning at all, Sony makes more money on console sales in addition to online subscriptions and Playstation store purchases.
Sony also probably saw what Xbox did to their brand and didn’t want to go down the route of the Playstation being just another PC without any good exclusive titles.
While the Steam Machine is console like, it isn’t competition for those buying a dedicated console for the living room TV.
